धारा 489
repealedTampering with property mark with intent to cause injury
Whoever removes, destroys, defaces or adds to any property mark, intending or knowing it to be likely that he may thereby cause injury to any person, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both.

पहले वाली संपत्ति-चिह्न संबंधी धाराएँ मुख्यतः नकली या नकल किए हुए चिह्नों से जुड़ी थीं; यह धारा असली संपत्ति-चिह्न से छेड़छाड़—उसे मिटाना, नुकसान पहुँचाना या बदल देना—पर केंद्रित है, वह भी विशेष रूप से असली मालिक को हानि पहुँचाने के इरादे से; उदाहरणार्थ, चोरी या विवादित संपत्ति को बिना चिह्न/बिना दावे वाली दिखाना। IPC को 1 July 2024 को निरस्त कर दिया गया और उसकी जगह Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 लाई गई, जो अब इन अपराधों को नियंत्रित करती है।
