धारा 461
repealedDishonestly breaking open receptacle containing property
Whoever dishonestly or with intent to commit mischief, breaks open or unfastens any closed receptacle which contains or which he believes to contain property, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both.

ताला लगा या बंद किया गया पात्र इस बात का संकेत है कि स्वामी उसकी वस्तुओं को सुरक्षित और निजी रखना चाहता है। यह धारा उस अपेक्षा की रक्षा करती है, क्योंकि कोई व्यक्ति यदि बेईमानी के इरादे से या वस्तुओं को क्षति पहुँचाने के इरादे से ऐसे पात्र को जोर-जबरदस्ती खोलता है, तो—even यदि कोई चोरी पूरी न हुई हो—केवल जबरन खोलना ही स्वामी के अपने सामान पर नियंत्रण के विरुद्ध एक गलत आचरण है और दंडनीय है।
