धारा 285
Procedure for summary trials
(1) In trials under this Chapter, the procedure specified in this Sanhita for the trial of summons-case shall be followed except as hereinafter mentioned.
(2) No sentence of imprisonment for a term exceeding three months shall be passed in the case of any conviction under this Chapter.

क्योंकि सार-न्याय समय बचाने के लिए पूर्ण वाद-प्रक्रिया की कई औपचारिकताएँ छोड़ देता है, इसलिए कानून सज़ा की अधिकतम सीमा कम रखता है। यह अभियुक्त की रक्षा करता है: जब प्रक्रिया तेज़ और कम विस्तारपूर्ण हो, तो उसके अंतर्गत दी जाने वाली परिणतियाँ भी सीमित होनी चाहिए, ताकि यह शॉर्टकट समानुपाती और निष्पक्ष बना रहे।
