Indian Penal Code, 1860
Section 236
repealedAbetting in India the counterfeiting out of India of coin
Whoever, being within India abets the counterfeiting of coin out of India shall be punished in the same manner as if he abetted the counterfeiting of such coin within India.
Why this exists
Counterfeiting rings often operate across borders — someone in India might supply designs, funding, or instructions to counterfeiters based abroad. Without this section, a person could argue that since the actual counterfeiting happened outside India's territory, Indian law couldn't reach their conduct. This section closes that loophole by extending liability to anyone in India who abets counterfeiting occurring elsewhere, ensuring cross-border counterfeiting schemes cannot escape Indian jurisdiction simply by locating the physical act of counterfeiting abroad.
