Indian Penal Code, 1860
Section 235
repealedPossession of instrument or material for the purpose of using the same for counterfeiting coin
Whoever is in possession of any instrument or material, for the purpose of using the same for counterfeiting coin, or knowing or having reason to believe that the same is intended to be used for that purpose, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years, and shall also be liable to fine;
Why this exists
Even without actively making counterfeiting tools, simply holding onto equipment or materials meant for that purpose is treated as a serious step toward the crime. This section lets authorities intervene once someone is caught possessing the means to counterfeit coin, rather than waiting for actual fake coins or tool-making activity, closing an important gap in preventing counterfeiting operations from advancing further.
