Indian Penal Code, 1860
Section 232
repealedCounterfeiting Indian coin
Whoever counterfeits, or knowingly performs any part of the process of counterfeiting Indian coin, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.
Why this exists
This section singles out Indian coin for tougher punishment than counterfeiting coin generally (covered by the previous section), reflecting the direct threat that faking the nation's own currency poses to its economy and public trust in government-issued money. The heavier maximum sentence — up to life imprisonment — signals how seriously the law treats attacks on the integrity of Indian currency compared to foreign or generic coin.
