The Constitution of India
Article 63
The Vice-President of India
There shall be a Vice-President of India.
Why this exists
The framers wanted a clear line of succession and a constitutional officer to preside over the Rajya Sabha (Council of States), ensuring continuity of government if the President could not act or the office fell vacant. Article 63 is the foundational clause that brings this office into existence before later Articles (64-71) detail its powers, election, and term.
Common misconceptions
- Myth: Article 63 describes the powers and duties of the Vice-President.
Fact: Article 63 only creates the office. Its powers, election method, and term are covered in later Articles like 64-71.
