The Constitution of India

Article 393

Short title

Why this exists

Every major legal document needs a short, official name so it can be easily referred to in laws, courts, and everyday conversation instead of being described at length. Article 393 is a standard drafting convention (similar to 'short title' clauses found in ordinary Acts of Parliament) that the Constituent Assembly included to formally christen the document as it came into force on 26 January 1950.

Common misconceptions
  • Myth: Article 393 grants some special power or right, since it's part of the Constitution's operative articles.
Fact: It does not create any rights, duties, or powers. It is purely a naming provision, similar to the 'short title' clause found at the start of most ordinary laws.
